A Pig's Tale: Hog Named 6-7 Pardoned by Miami-Dade Mayor.
While perhaps not at the same level as granting clemency to Thanksgiving turkeys, but the county's top official had her own presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She deserves this act of mercy. No offenses are on her docket,” stated the mayor in a speech with clear references to the sheer volume of pardons issued since the commencement of a second term in office.
“Except perhaps for eating six or seven apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “Let this swine have a lengthy and joyful existence without fear.”
This ceremony, which both honors and questions the region’s Hispanic tradition of eating roast pork during the holidays, was created to emulate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The animal, donated by a first responder, was named for the current slang trend of young people exclaiming “six-seven” – deriving from a hip-hop line – often for no discernable reason. The trend became so pervasive that a major dictionary recently declared “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
A New Life
This particular pig is now set to enjoy its days at a countryside refuge “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a cherished method to kick off the holiday season,” said the event host, in a decidedly positive message.
“It captures the character of Miami: joyful, diverse, and rooted in traditions that unite the community. Annually, we are honored to observe heritage and mercy in a way unique to Miami.”
Guests enjoyed a plant-based fare of croquettes and cafecito as they celebrated the swine's new lease on life.
