Adult Swim's Top Fresh Series of 2025 Earns a Significant Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.
During the fall season, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the network launched a fresh animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. During a period often defined by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Major Commitment
In mid-December, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two more seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The show follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."
A President's Endorsement
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and championed its uniquely offbeat sensibility.
"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about observing this endearing family go about their simple existence.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to evolve comedy past its current layer of irony. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
The Path Forward
Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa may well catalyze that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
