American flight controllers are more and more seeking second jobs and calling in sick, as they remain on duty unpaid during the federal closure, the transport chief has stated.

"These professionals are becoming strained," the official informed a news outlet on Sunday, as some flights were grounded on the California shoreline due to staffing shortages.

Following the federal closure on October 1st, flight controllers, who are deemed essential workers, were instructed to continue performing their duties uncompensated.

But some have been absent, leading terminals to halt or reduce their flight operations, which has exacerbated delays caused by weather and additional factors.

Over three thousand American flights were postponed on the weekend, and the secretary stated he anticipates the situation to deteriorate further.

"I am seeing the pressure," Duffy remarked in an interview on Sunday Morning Futures, noting that he had spoken to several controllers to listen to their worries firsthand.

"They are pursuing second jobs, they're out there looking, 'Can I work for Uber, am I able to secure another source of income to cover expenses?'" he added.

The secretary added that on Saturday twenty-two notifications at airports indicated flights would be delayed due to a lack of workers - among the peak since the shutdown started.

The American federal closure entered its twenty-sixth day on the weekend, rendering it the second most extended shutdown in history.

Duffy has repeatedly warned that aviation regulators would slow down the quantity of planes in the air if there is a shortage of security staff.
