Ben & Jerry's Co-Founder Alleges Parent Company Blocked Palestine-Themed Ice Cream Product
The co-founders of the well-known ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's has claimed how corporate owner the multinational conglomerate stopped the launch for an innovative pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, that co-founded the company with his partner, announced that he plans to personally create the controversial flavor as part of a personal collection showcasing causes Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking out about.
Ongoing Conflict Between Founders and Corporate Owner
This latest development deepens the ongoing conflict among the internationally recognized ice cream maker and its corporate parent, the British consumer goods giant that has owned the ice cream brand since 2000.
The co-founders maintain how Unilever and their ice cream division Magnum improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's against "maintaining its activist principles".
The Fruit Sorbet as a Symbol for Support
Mr. Cohen announced through an Instagram video that he is creating an innovative watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, asking for public suggestions for naming options plus potential ingredients.
“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” the founder declared from a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored ice cream that advocates for permanent peace for Palestinians while demanding repairing the damage that was done there.”
This particular fruit has become a symbol of support for the Palestinian people because of its colors, that mirror the colors in Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Previous Social Engagement and Current Developments
Several years ago, the ice cream company refused to sell its products in territories under Israeli control, leading to Unilever selling the Israeli operation over to a local licensee, thereby permitting ongoing distribution in disputed territories.
The new dessert series is being created through Ben's Best, the socially conscious ice cream brand that originally created in 2016 for endorsing ex- US presidential candidate Senator Sanders via the product "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Changes plus Upcoming Intentions
Mr. Cohen stated how he plans to create other ice cream flavors that address issues that the company was prevented from speaking about openly due to corporate restrictions.
The announcement follows co-founder Jerry Greenfield stepped down his position at Ben & Jerry's recently, after many years with the organization, citing concerns regarding how the company's autonomy had been compromised after Unilever's decision to curb its social activism.
Previously, Ben Cohen commented that "Jerry has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was breaking it."
“My conscience leads me to continue to work within the organization to advocate for its independence ensuring that the company can achieve its ethical purpose, the values which established its foundation and has maintained for over 40 years," he explained to media outlets.
