Entire Career of Earnings Insufficient for UK Workers to Enter Most Affluent 10%, Report Reveals

Per fresh analysis, the typical worker in the UK would have to work 52 years' worth of salary to reach the net worth of the richest 10% in the country.

Widening Economic Disparity Over Time

This research analyzed net worth statistics covering the Covid pandemic period and found that back in 2006-08, it would have taken 38 years of typical employment income to reach the richest segment of the economic ladder.

An economic expert involved with the study stated: "Economic disparities in Britain are currently so significant that a average worker saving all their earnings across their entire working life would continue to be incapable to achieve the peak of the economic scale."

Quantifying the Financial Disparity

The analysis revealed that the disparity between the wealth of the median citizen and someone in the richest segment was £1 million in the mid-2000s, but had widened to £1.3 million in real terms by the pandemic years.

The analyst continued: "These gaps are particularly worrying as economic movement in Britain is low – individuals who begin life wealthy tend to stay wealthy, and vice versa."

Comparative Financial Divide

Even with the wealth gap expanding in actual numbers, the portion of total wealth in the UK owned by the richest households – termed "proportional economic disparity" – has been "broadly stable since the 1980s," as stated in the research.

Over this timeframe, overall assets in the UK rose substantially from triple the annual GDP, to almost 7.5 times.

Contributors of Economic Disparity

Termed "automatic" gains, through growing real estate costs and variations in pension valuations, were the main drivers of the growing financial disparity from 2010 onward, according to the report.

These gains typically went to senior citizens with real estate, the research shows – worsening the generational financial disparity.

Age-Based Economic Gaps

The typical financial disparity between individuals aged 30-34 and sixty-somethings increased over twofold in actual value, from £135k in 2006-08, to £310,000.

Geographic Variations

There were also significant area-based disparities, with the average level of wealth in the pandemic period amounting to £290k in south-east England, where real estate values have typically increased quickly, compared with 110 thousand pounds in the north-east.

Pandemic Period Effects

During the pandemic, when numerous employees were covered under the government-supported job retention program, and Covid shutdowns reduced expenditure possibilities, the data shows numerous families were in a position to set aside money, growing their net worth.

More affluent homes achieved superior outcomes, though. "The average household in the poorest fifth saw their available funds increase by just £80 over the pandemic period (across the pandemic timeframe), broadly the same as the 24 months before COVID. Conversely, the average household in the wealthiest fifth saw their liquid savings rise by £4,200," the study reveals.
