The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
