A uniquely yellow-colored residential building in the background assisted us verify the video.

Our team is verifying images and video shared this morning that depict the aftermath of a reported car bomb blast that Russian officials say killed a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.

Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he succumbed of his injuries. A probe is under way.

The initial step to check the location from which the pictures were from relied on posts saying the blast happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the Russian capital.

We used panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to match the unique yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex captured in the footage.

Locating additional buildings, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed where the footage were captured.

Additionally, we verified that the videos were recent and that the visuals had not been manipulated.
