New York Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during a recent discussion.
“What reassures me, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he is expected to recover fully.”
The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the hospital, where his condition is described as in critical but steady condition.
“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “However, I can share, from our conversation, he felt really upbeat. And again, that puts my mind at ease, because of his outlook and he’s talking that way.”
New York police released security footage Monday of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. There were no additional victims as confirmed by officials.
The attack took place in the early morning on Sunday near the famous arena and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, as reported. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “a great deal” since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a child.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There’s a process to this, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd did not participate during the current season, his debut year with New York, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on mid-August with a shoulder issue that required surgery.
He joined the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was projected as a key part of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a practice session on August 2 and was carted from the field.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad all season long while healing from his surgery.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he is a regular at our matches. His commitment is total. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and later was with the Texans later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
