New York's next mayor affirms plans to reside in the iconic Gracie Mansion
New York City's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to make his home in the historic Gracie Mansion, departing from the affordable apartment that was a central issue in his election bid.
A Historic Residence
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the official residence for nearly all New York City mayors since the mid-20th century.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a central issue, hesitated to declare this decision immediately after his electoral win in November.
"My choice came down to our family's safety and the need to focusing my complete efforts on carrying out the agenda for affordability New Yorkers elected me on," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.
Thanking a Neighborhood
His home was in the Astoria neighbourhood, a community renowned for its diverse immigrant populations and global cuisine.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: my gratitude for showing us what is great about New York City," he noted.
"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, the community will always live a part of me and my work," he said.
A Contentious Issue
Throughout his election campaign, Mamdani connected his central policy – a rent freeze – to his own housing situation.
Yet his critics, mainly former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for occupying the apartment despite the fact that he came from a well-known family.
Not All Mayors Stayed
Some mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, kept his residence in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his time in office, which concluded in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a space for official events, and pushed for an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion sometime around his swearing-in on 1 January, he will find himself in a setting far removed from his humble Astoria apartment.
With its pale yellow exterior, forest green window covers, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house situated by the East River.
Internally, the ground floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished consistent with the home's early 19th-century origins.
The property, which reportedly has several bedrooms, also includes increased security measures to protect the mayor and his family.
Ghostly Tales
Some residents have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that they experienced doors opening and shutting on their own, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "I don't care the skeptics say," he insisted in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
His former home is rent stabilised, which means the city sets limits on how much landlords can raise the rent each year.
New Yorkers consider these apartments valuable lifelines as the housing expenses rises faster than what many can afford.
Data indicated Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from the property website Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
