A popular South African media personality and entertainer has been shot dead in the country's largest city Johannesburg, causing national outrage across a nation struggling with entrenched crime.

Warrick Stock, widely recognized as DJ Warras, was attacked in the central business district on a Tuesday afternoon.

Police said the 40-year-old presenter was accosted by a trio of assailants, with one began shooting at him before fleeing on foot.

The purpose behind the attack is unknown and no suspects have been apprehended have taken place, police said.

Details of the Attack

Police said that Stock was targeted as he was leaving a premises close to the city center landmark.

He had spent several hours at the site overseeing the setup of security systems, which had been illegally inhabited by unknown people, as per local media.

"The report indicates the deceased was approached by three unknown suspects after parking his vehicle, and they shot at him before running from the location on foot," an official report confirmed.

Security camera video reportedly captured a suspect with dreadlocks and dressed in what appeared to be a security uniform shooting on Stock before making his escape.

The DJ tried to run away after he was wounded but succumbed to his injuries a short distance away.

Officials noted that Stock had an weapon on his person and nothing was taken during the incident.

Important clues, like spent shells, were found at the scene.

Officials are asking members of the public who may have have information to contact them.

"Our information indicates they covered significant ground after the attack, and officers have been following their trail to establish their whereabouts," added an official.

"Words fail me. I don't have words," she said.
"It is clear he was a representative for countless citizens. He spoke out bravely about topics not many people were ready to speak about. This is a tremendous loss."

She appealed to the community to refrain from sharing disturbing footage from the scene, saying this was an incredibly difficult time, above all for Stock's children.

In a communication, the channel he worked for declared Stock was known for his charisma, approachability and intelligent commentary, adding that his memory "will live on".
