The Academy Awards will commence broadcasting solely on the global video platform in the year 2029, representing the most recent major shift in Hollywood.

The organization behind the Oscars declared the decision on Wednesday, confirming that it signed a long-term agreement giving the streaming service the sole worldwide broadcasting rights to the Oscars until 2033.

The awards show, set for March 15th, has aired for five decades on the traditional network. Commencing in 2029, the show will be available live and for free on the digital platform.

This is a further substantial restructuring in the entertainment world, which is grappling with corporate acquisitions and consolidations, along with drastic production cuts.

"Our Academy represents an international organization, and this alliance will permit us to increase availability to the work of the Academy to the most extensive international crowd attainable - which will be positive for our film artists and the cinematic world," said Academy leadership in a statement.

Throughout a long period, ratings of the televised event have declined, although there was a small rise in recent years, with a significant number of youthful audiences watching from mobile devices and laptops.

In a corresponding announcement, the head of YouTube called the Oscars "among our fundamental cultural institutions" and said that partnering with the Academy would "motivate a fresh wave of creativity and movie fans while staying true to the Oscars' storied history".

ABC, which has televised the awards since 1976, stated that it was eagerly anticipating "to the next three telecasts" it will continue to air.

The move coincides with major studios face intricate takeover attempts. Both options were considered problematic for an sector that has experienced severe reductions over the recent period.

Similar to big production houses, traditional TV channels have encountered challenges as the viewers has increasingly opted for on-demand video as an alternative.

YouTube obtaining the license to the Oscars clearly signals that the dominance of digital platforms will continue to grow.
