The Details Known About the Fatalities of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 people were killed and in excess of 40 were hurt when gunmen fired on a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian police have called a act of terrorism.

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Described as a father of five children, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She described the events before the attack, saying they had been standing together when the shooting started. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the statement read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed in the incident, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number remain under care, with several in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
